The life expectancy of people with intellectual disabilities has increased significantly during the last century. Like the rest of the population, they are more likely to die of illnesses associated with old age and in need of end-of-life care. However, their limited intellectual and communication ability together with the labeling effect imposes a challenge in the care delivery.

In this training, the speaker will share his practice experience and skills in helping people with intellectual disabilities and their families to face end-of-life issues. Specific strategies to facilitate communication between the health care team, patients, and their caregivers will be highlighted.
